What Happens if You Fail a Coronavirus Screening Test?

epidemic, disease, coronavirus

As Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to change our social and economic landscapes – individuals, businesses, and government organizations worldwide have been forced to take additional precautions to limit virus transmission. Preventative measures like hand sanitizing stations, face masks and shields, and plexiglass coverings are now commonplace in professional and public facilities. Maintaining a safe, virus-free workplace is essential to continue operations and avoid shutting down in an already challenging economy.

Masks and shields provide a defensive separation between an infected person and an uninfected person, but preventing this infected person from coming in contact with others helps to eliminate the health threat they pose altogether. Conducting a coronavirus screening test is a frontline defense mechanism that can help keep infected or possibly infected people out of your building.

RimotHEALTH: Automated Workplace Virus Screening

RimotHEALTH is an automated coronavirus screening test that helps eliminate the cost of manual screening and can help reduce community spread. The Kiosk provides a completely touchless solution derived from three main components: a thermal imaging camera, an electronic questionnaire screen, and foot response pedals.

The thermal camera automatically measures an individual’s facial and body temperature, even if they are wearing most masks or eyewear. The questionnaire provides a customizable survey to assess if the person being tested is likely to have contracted the coronavirus recently. Foot response pedals allow people to issue their response without touching a potentially contaminated surface with their hands.
Combining the tactics of strategic questions and temperature measurements are essential to determine if someone poses a health risk to your organization. The questionnaire can even be customized to suit your unique environment and operation. Questions can easily be added or removed as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve and we learn more about the nature of this virus.

The data is collected and uploaded in real-time to a cloud-based server. You can view this data through your own management portal, accessible from your computer or smart device, to get an overview of real-time and historical screening information. This platform is easy to use and is backed by Rimot’s trusted and proven monitoring system.

How to Use a RimotHEALTH Kiosk

First and foremost, if you are not feeling well, even if you’re only experiencing mild symptoms, you should stay home. If you know you’re not feeling well, there is a high probability that you will fail the coronavirus screening test, and you should take the necessary precautions to isolate yourself from others. It is recommended to minimize the number of entry points in a facility to help limit areas that can potentially become contaminated, but if multiple entrances are required a RimotHEALTH kiosk should be set up at every entrance.

The process of RimotHEALTH is intuitive and straightforward to follow. An individual approaches the Kiosk and the thermal imaging camera will automatically take their temperature. After their temperature is taken, the questionnaire will begin. The user issues their response to all questions using the foot response pedals. Once the questionnaire is complete, the person being tested will either pass or fail.

Once an individual passes the coronavirus screening test, they may continue into the building. They must, of course, still follow all preventative measures like social distancing and sanitization in accordance with company and government regulations. However, if they fail, notifications and alerts are sent out to key personnel to ensure this situation is handled accordingly and the individual is not allowed to enter the building.

What Are Your Options If You Fail the RimotHEALTH Screening Test?

The policies and procedures in place for how commercial and government organizations are handling those who fail the coronavirus screening test is their own decision. As a guideline, recommended by healthcare officials, the person who fails a COVID-19 screen test should be immediately redirected away from others. Upon failure, we commonly hear operations require this individual to:

  • Return home immediately and isolate for 14 days
  • Seek immediate medical attention/testing
  • Go to a secondary screening room for retesting

We have seen some businesses employ a failsafe in the testing process if an individual does not pass the screening test, usually when their temperature is above the approved limit. The person will be asked to sit and relax in a separate room away from everyone else for about 15 minutes. This allows for their temperature to regulate if they had just been exerting themselves in some way like biking or walking to work, or if outdoor temperatures are higher than usual. After the 15 minutes, they will be asked to conduct the test once more.

Additional recommendations for limiting virus exposure and transmission by HealthCanada and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • Have a procedure in place for the safe transport of an employee who becomes sick while at work. The employee may need to be transported home or to a healthcare provider.
  • Wait 24 hours before cleaning and disinfecting to minimize the potential for other employees being exposed to respiratory droplets. If waiting 24 hours is not feasible, wait as long as possible.
  • During this waiting period, open outside doors and windows to increase air circulation in these areas.
  • Inform employees of their possible exposure to COVID-19 in the workplace but maintain confidentiality.
  • Most workplaces should follow the Public Health Recommendations for Community-Related Exposure and instruct potentially exposed employees to stay home for 14 days, telework if possible, and self-monitor for symptoms.
  • Where feasible, adjust policies and procedures to reduce social contact, such as teleworking arrangements, flexible hours, staggering start times, use of email and teleconferencing.
